Knowledge Base
What factors affect tree removal pricing most?
Tree height and trunk diameter account for roughly 60% of the total job cost. Access difficulty and risk factors (power lines, structural proximity, slope) account for another 25%. Equipment needs, hauling volume, and overhead margin make up the remainder. Wood species density also affects cutting time and crew fatigue.
How does this calculator determine labor hours?
Labor hours are estimated by tree height category: small trees 1-2 hours, medium 3-5 hours, large 5-8 hours, extra-large 8-16 hours. These are adjusted by DBH (larger trunks take longer to section) and access difficulty (manual carrying vs. drive-up access). Actual hours depend on crew experience and equipment.
Are stump grinding costs included?
Stump grinding is an optional add-on. Toggle it on and enter the stump diameter in inches. The calculator uses $5-$10 per inch with a $175 minimum charge per stump, which reflects current Southeast Michigan market rates.

Is this pricing accurate for my area?
Base rates are calibrated for Washtenaw County and Southeast Michigan. Adjust the overhead margin up or down to match your local market. Urban areas with higher operating costs and permit requirements typically warrant the 35-45% overhead range. Rural areas with lower overhead may use 25-35%.
